Cauldron cocktails, coven gatherings, wine and witchcraft: call it what you like, it’s fun and easy to put together a spooky but elegant and elevated Halloween happy hour.
In late August we hosted a Practical Magic happy hour celebration for our friend Christine at Swish & Click, and here are our main take-aways:
Assemble your snacks
Keep it simple but make it lush. Charctuerie calling your name? More is more. Use different elevations of serving vessels to enhance the visual experience for guests. Think platters with stemmed bowls, cake plates and tall pedestals; bringing served items up to different heights garners interest and adds dimension to your spread of meats, cheeses, fruits, chocolates, olives, nuts and more.

Create the Mood
We used tall pillar candles and tons of greenery found in the backyard. Really! Check out this elevated greenery trellis we found at Anthropologie. We have a few of them now – they’re so handy.
Be Practical, But Make Magic
We used the frozen machine to serve midnight margaritas, but we also created a free-spirited option utilizing this magic potion recipe (scroll to the bottom – it’s the Lemon Grove Cooler) – and allowed guests to choose the gin and vodka of their preference. The color-changing properties of the cocktails add an element of magic to the experience, and it can be enjoyed by drinkers and non-drinkers.
Additionally, we re-worked a coffee yama cold brew tower to feature a moody purple potion, just for fun.
Forever Yours
Next, guests at this event were encouraged to make their own money bowl: We created a DIY station featuring bowls, rice, dried herbs, candles and spices with a mini-sign of the elements needed to build a money bowl. We also hired Amber Ambrose, a Houston-area Tarot professional, to give private readings in the dimly-lit room off to the side of the main event space. Guests took home a remarkable experience of a card reading and their own money bowls, so that they can take home a piece of the magic, and focus on their own personalized intentions and goals.
The Spell is Yours
Finally, you probably already have most of what you need to host your own Hocus Pocus Halloween Party or Practical Magic celebration. Check your cabinets and your backyard. Use our ideas and recipes. Tell us what magic we can create for you! Cheers@LadiesofLibation.com
